note: My mother is of Slovene origins, both of her parents ( m. Malja (Amalia ) Valencic b. on 27 October 1927, f. Franc Lukac b. in 1923) moved from a small village called Brezovo Brdo near Slovene/Italian border, to Rijeka after WW II. Franc Lukac died young, at age 33 in Rijeka, leaving my grandmother, unoccupied, not Croatian speaking (only Slovene and Italian) alone with two small children, my mother Jadranka of 8 and my aunt Zdenka of 5 (b. on 03 July 1953 in Rijeka)

Despite all this, she learned Croatian, finished a two year administration education, found firm employment as a typist, obtained driving license and worked nights at home as seamstress. She died on 14 April 2007 in Rijeka.
